How does a relay attack work?

See below for a realistic example of how quickly a relay attack can happen.

60 seconds. No trace.

The 4 simple steps of a relay attack

  1. Detection

Thief 1 activates a receiver within 30 meters of your car key. The car key continuously emits a signal towards the car. The receiver picks up this signal.

  2. Bridge

Thief 2 is next to your vehicle. The signal is amplified by the receiver and transmitted to thief 2.

  3. Access

The signal is now relayed by thief 2 to your vehicle. Your vehicle is unlocked.

  4. Start

The car starts and both thieves drive off with it. No signs of forced entry. No alarm. Owners often only notice hours later that the car is gone.

Do you recognize this?

Three signs your car key is vulnerable to a relay attack.

  • 1. Opening without a button

You open your car without pressing your key

  • 2. Starting in your pocket

You can start your car without taking the key out of your pocket

  • 3. Screened?

You don't shield your car key as soon as your car is parked
